The thesis titled “Plastic Waste Metamorphosis: A Unified Complex for Plastic Waste Recycling” envisions a comprehensive recycling facility that processes all types of plastic waste while raising public awareness about environmental responsibility. Recognizing plastic as both a revolutionary and harmful material, the project emphasizes efficient recycling through modern technology and experiential learning to help people understand its environmental impact.
Located in Chittagong, Bangladesh—one of the country’s key plastic waste contributors—the project addresses poor recycling practices and the issue of downcycling, where recycled plastic loses quality. The design form evolves from machine layout and site conditions, ensuring natural light and ventilation within a compact, functional structure. The complex is divided into two major parts: the industrial zone (factory, administration, and worker facilities) and the public zone, which allows visitors to observe the recycling process safely and learn from it.
Beyond its industrial function, the project fosters community engagement through recreational and educational spaces for workers and visitors alike. It envisions a future of zero plastic pollution, where improved recycling systems and public participation together reduce reliance on virgin plastic and help create a more sustainable urban environment.
